So excited for this group. Our garden and high tunnel are in Ohio on the WV border. I am a farm business specialist in WV and my family has a small farm stand. Two Sisters Homestead is named for my 5 & 6 year old daughters, we grow a variety of produce deep in a valley with less than 6 hours direct sunlight per day.
Hailey My 4 kiddos help me out in the garden...its so much fun to see them explore ☺️ i have a 7yo, 6 yo, 4 yo and 2 yo
Tara Nice! I grew up along the Ohio/WV (panhandle) border. Such a pretty area with the hills and river. I hope you aren’t impacted by the Ohio train derailment. Wishing you and your family well!

Hi All. I'm in SW Washington. I believe I'm 8B. I see a few fellow Washingtonians in this group. We've had random "false spring" days which gets me itchin' to want to get things in the ground. But we've been having on again off again snow the last few days which reminds me it's too soon to plant outside. I am getting starts going inside though. My garlic that I planted in November is doing fantastic. I got 6 chicks in September who are now laying ladies and they've been working over one of my last year's garden areas. My garden is spread out over three different locations on my double lot in town. A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do to spend some time in her happy place and get a little soil under her nails. 😉 This will be my second year of gardening so I'm excited to get plenty of tips and garden/homesteading camaraderie in this group. Blessings to you all. [:healthystrawberry] [:healthycarrot] [:healthypeas]
Sue Im also PNW zone 8b
Sue This year Im goimg no dig
Shelly I’m with you in WA, but in some 8A. I’m itching too. We’re getting closer! Just praying we don’t get another late April snow. Killed off ALL my flowers from every fruit tree. I’ll be sure to cover mine this year somehow if that is forecasted again. That was just so tragic.
Barbara Sue, I did no till last year. I had a few loads of wood chips hauled in. It worked well. I'm expanding this year and will be getting more wood chips through the free getchipdrop.com site. Happy Gardening 😊
Jessica Welcome to the group!
Now this is my kind of platform! I'm in NW TN. I've been gardening on some level for at least 10 years. Only the last 5 have I been serious about growing as much as my own food as possible. I'm building more raised beds this year with free reclaimed cypress wood and I'm very excited. Let's be honest, I'm not getting younger and it's taking a toll on my body. I look forward to "growing" with everyone!
Well, this is fun. Thanks, Jessica! I'm in Western Washington, zone 8b. I garden mostly in raised beds. We have fruit trees, blackberries, and hazelnuts on our property. When we moved in, we jokingly called our land "dandelion heaven." That's not so funny anymore. Deer come through and like to browse anything not netted off in my garden. They keep the rose bush pruned high. I believe in co-existing with nature and want to give them their own garden area. Our yard has moles, When they annoy me, I try to remember that they are good for the clay soil. Besides, they are God's creatures and have to live somewhere. We often see birds, including mourning doves, blue jays, juncos, towees, marshhawks, crows, and both bald and (rarely) golden eagles.
Hi I'm Kristi and live in Western WA zone 8a. I am working to get my raised beds in and a fence around the garden. I only have 5 acres, but a black bear sleeps here and a cougar uses it as a path to other places. Then there's the deer........I'm excited to learn how to use this program and get everything growing!
Janalyn Hello, Kristi! It's nice to find another Washingtonian here. You're place sounds awesome. We sometimes see bear scat but no signs of cougar. They are in the area, but we are closer to town than they like. I'm glad about that because the presence of cougars makes me nervous. We have less land than you, only an acre and a half, but its close to a greenbelt area, which is why we see a lot of wildlife. Like you, I can't wait for the growing season.
Jessica Oh, wow! I can't imagine dealing with bears!!
Jessica Do you want June bearing or ever bearing?
Jessica I am open to either, and eventually would like to have both. These will be mainly for fresh eating, as I don't anticipate my kids leaving many for preserving ;)
